Tar and Chip is a paving method that combines hot liquid asphalt with layers of crushed stone to create a textured, durable surface. It delivers the strength of pavement with the natural charm of gravel—making it a perfect choice for driveways, rural roads, and farm entrances.
Built to withstand the elements, tar and chip surfaces hold up well under the pressure of daily traffic, shifting weather, and heavy loads.
The naturally rough surface provides excellent traction in all seasons—especially in rain, snow, or icy conditions. It’s a safe and reliable option for sloped driveways and areas prone to slick surfaces.
It requires less material and maintenance over time, making it a smart investment for both primary and secondary driveways.
We believe great results come from a great process. Every tar and chip project we complete follows a proven, step-by-step approach that ensures quality, durability, and customer satisfaction from day one.
We start by visiting your property to assess the area, take measurements, and understand how the space is used. We look at factors like slope, drainage, soil conditions, and traffic patterns to recommend the best approach for your project.

Next, we apply a layer of hot liquid asphalt (tar) evenly over the prepared surface. This acts as a binder, anchoring the stone chips in place and forming a flexible, resilient surface that moves with the ground rather than cracking over time.
While the tar is still hot, we immediately spread your selected stone chips across the surface. A heavy roller presses the chips into the tar to lock everything in place and create that signature textured finish. This step is key for strength, grip, and visual appeal.
We finish by sweeping off any excess stone and making sure your property is neat and ready to use. While the surface is typically usable within 24–48 hours, it continues to cure and settle in the days that follow, creating a strong, finished look that only improves with time.
We adore our new home and could not be happier with the Taylor constructors team. The hard work and genuine care they had throughout the process was wonderful! Everything went so fast and we are amazed with the finished result!
Taylor Constructors made our first home build experience fabulous. It was fun and exciting. They collaborated with us on every aspect of the design and build, providing guidance when we needed it and solutions when we needed them. We couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome.
From day one of meeting John–through the 4 month building process it was a pleasure working with him, his family and all his subs. This home was our 3rd custom home build throughout middle Tennessee and by far the smoothest!
